Infill Housing to Mitigate Urban Sprawl
Our winning design for the “Infill Challenge” by the City of Kelowna will help local communities increase density and sustainability for years to come
There are few projects that reflect and combine both the vision and values of LIME Architecture Inc. as closely as the City of Kelowna RU7 zone. Our team is proud to have been recognized by the City of Kelowna as one of the 2 winning design solutions submitted to the City through the City’s Infill Challenge. The City’s decision to hold an open design challenge in their effort to develop a new infill housing zone for the City of Kelowna was both innovative and visionary. The City’s long range approach to RU7 is grounded by a sustainable vision of using existing developable land more efficiently thereby reducing the impact of urban sprawl. By opening the competition to the local design and build community, the City was able to take the pulse of current trends and preferences locally toward urban design that will help ensure positive local reception and overall success.
Leadership in Community Innovation
With the establishment of the new RU7 zone, the City is demonstrating leadership in community innovation by establishing a Development Permit exception process for RU7 projects that use one of the 2 winning designs. This process will prove to be a benefit to Land Developers, Private Owners and the City of Kelowna as it will simplify and expedite the process from design to construction as well as reduce the administrative requirements by the City. The simplified administrative process is being achieved by the City, establishing template projects that will qualify for Development Permit exception. Now that our winning design has been processed by the City, and we have projects submitted for Building Permit, we look forward to continuing to be involved in the exciting development of the RU7 areas within the City of Kelowna.

One additional benefit of the City’s approach to establishing the RU7 zone in Kelowna is the strengthening of connections within our community. Teams came together that paired builders, designers and architects in creative ways, and our office has experienced the benefit of stronger ties to the other winning RU7 team – all to the benefit of the community that is the City of Kelowna.
